Biographical Sketch of James Shields
Linn County delegate
James Shields was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky December 5, 1811. He came to Oregon with his first wife Matilda and their four small children in 1852. They filed for a 320-acre donation land claim in Linn County shortly after arriving.
In 1857 he was a Linn County delegate to the constitutional convention and served on the Committee on Expenses of Convention.
James’ first wife died in January of 1857 and he married Sarah Cotton on April 26, 1859. They had five children together. Shields died October 11, 1888 in Linn County. He is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Albany.
