Oregon's military before World War I
The 1847 Cayuse Indian attack on missionary Marcus Whitman illustrated the clash of cultures between Native Americans and early settlers to Oregon Country. The Oregon Militia later mounted a campaign against the Cayuse and the suspects were tried and executed in 1850.
