Provisional and Territorial Records Guide

Project Background

"The Guide to Oregon Provisional and Territorial Government Records" was originally created as a publication of the Archives Division in 1990. Funding for the Guide was provided by the National Historic Publications and Records Commission through Grant 88-102. (Note: Hard copies of the Guide may be purchased from the State Archives for $15 each. Please contact a Reference Archivist at (503) 373-0701 Ext.1 if interested.)

The creation of the Guide involved three distinct phases in which members of the Archives Division played key roles. The first phase included conception and preparation. For this, Terry Baxter deserves special recognition. He arranged, described, and prepared the records for filming. Microfilming was done by Jodi Miller Nelson and Ross Harbaugh.

The second phase of the project was completed by Project Archivists David Wendell and Jim Yarbrough. They not only assisted in preparing the data for the Guide, but they also wrote many of the series descriptions, completed the data entry, and created many of the maps used as illustrations.

The online version of the Guide was created in 1998 by summer intern Desiree Garcia with assistance from Layne Sawyer, Project Director; Gary Halvorson and Tim Backer, Reference Archivists; and Dan Cantrall, Electronic Information Coordinator.

Roy C. Turnbaugh, Director of the Oregon State Archives, provided advice and suggestions for improving the Guide and encouraged the project staff throughout the course of the project.
