Capitol Planning Commission Records Guide
Scope and Content Note
The records of the Capitol Planning Commission, which span the years 1949 to 2003, document the commission's activities from its inception to its latest activities prior to suspension. These records consist of minutes, area plans, fiscal and legal records, reports, audits, news clippings, maps, architectural drawings and photos. These notably include the Commission's meeting minutes, 1949-1987; a commissioner's file, 1949-1969; a set of biennial reports, 1949-1972.
The arrangement of the records of the CPC falls under five series classifications: 1) plans, projects, proposals; 2) administrative, legal, fiscal; 3) minutes; 4) commissioner's file; 5) clippings. Plans and administrative series' are arranged alphabetically by topic; folder lists are available. Minutes, Commissioner's file and Clippings are arranged chronologically. Items of an oversized nature such as maps and drawings, or photographs have been separated individually. Separations are described at item level; a list of these separations is available.
The bulk of the accessioned records are paper-based and textual in nature. However, there are a substantial number of architectural drawings, maps, photos, and oversized items. The types of drawings include: grounds planning, buildings, building accessories, building signs, office plans, development plans, proposals for development. Various maps include: capitol mall demarcations; zoning; area ownership; waterways; development plans; bridge and road construction; effects of street closure; future development of capitol group; master plan schemes.
