Present Duties
The Oregon Business Development Department (OBDD) is a catalyst for economic growth in Oregon. The department’s business development programs help retain, expand and recruit businesses to Oregon; its public works funding programs work with local communities to build infrastructure; and its Innovation and Economic Strategies Division focuses on growing jobs for the future.
The nine-member Oregon Business Development Commission consists of seven members appointed by the governor and two members who are nonvoting, ex officio members: one appointed by the president of the Senate and one appointed by the speaker of the House. The commission guides department policies and strategies for advancing Oregon’s economy.
The department works cooperatively with state and federal agencies, non-profit community groups and organizations, businesses, industry, cities, counties, local economic development districts, ports and other organizations to create opportunities and address challenges pertaining to economic development. OBDD is also one of five state agencies that coordinate resources to make up the governor’s Economic Revitalization Team.
The department helps communities meet needs and standards for clean water, wastewater disposal and other public facilities; develop telecommunications services and infrastructure, particularly in rural Oregon; and support community-identified economic development programs. There are 11 regional business officers who live in Oregon communities where they serve as key contacts for accessing department services:
