Present Duties
The Oregon Business Development Department (Business Oregon) develops and implements Oregon’s economic development policy and strategy. The mission of Business Oregon is to create, retain, expand and attract businesses that provide sustainable, family-wage jobs for Oregonians through public-private partnerships, leveraged funding and support of economic opportunities for Oregon companies and entrepreneurs. Business Oregon includes the Infrastructure Finance Authority, where staff and programs assist communities in building infrastructure capacity and community facilities to address public health, safety and compliance issues necessary to improve the quality of life for Oregonians.
The nine-member Oregon Business Development Commission consists of seven members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate plus two members who are non-voting,
ex officio members; one appointed by the president of the Senate and one by the speaker of the House. The commission established a framework, intended to work in concert with the Oregon Business Plan, for Business Oregon to further job and wage growth throughout the state. The Infrastructure Finance Authority Board is a nine-member independent board with oversight of the Infrastructure Finance Authority and the state's infrastructure activities. Six board members are appointed by the governor; three are a direct appointment by the treasurer, speaker of the House, and president of the Senate.
The department works closely with state and
federal agencies, non-profit groups, businesses, industry groups, cities, counties, local economic development districts, ports and others to create opportunities and address challenges pertaining to economic development. Business Oregon also helps communities meet needs and standards for clean water, wastewater disposal and other public facilities; develop telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in rural Oregon; and support
community-identified economic development
projects. Business Oregon has nine business development officers located throughout the state where they serve as key contacts for accessing department services:
