Present Duties
The Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists was created in 1989. The primary purpose of the board is consumer protection. The board determines professional standards and issues licenses to counselors and to marriage and family therapists, sets standards for licensees and registered interns working toward licensure, sets and enforces continuing education requirements, publishes an annual directory, and investigates alleged violations and complaints against applicants and licensees.
The board consists of eight members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate, including three licensed professional counselors, two licensed marriage and family therapists, a
faculty member and two public representatives. Members serve three year terms.
