Present Duties
Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) contributes to public safety by licensing only qualified persons and vehicles to drive on streets and highways. DMV issues titles to protect the financial and ownership interests in vehicles. There are currently more than 3.5 million licensed drivers and over 4.2 million registered vehicles in Oregon. The fees collected for licensing and registration are dedicated to the Oregon Highway Fund. Law enforcement uses DMV computer records thousands of times daily. DMV also licenses commercial driving schools and instructors, snowmobile dealers and instructors, and vehicle dealers and wreckers. Each day, about 12,000 customers are served at DMV offices statewide, and about 1.8 million customers are served by telephone each year.
