Present Duties
The Department of Education is directed by the State Board of Education to implement state policies regarding pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The Superintendent of Public Instruction is the executive head of the Department of Education, serving 197 elementary and secondary school districts and 20 education service districts, which in turn serve some 561,698 elementary and secondary school students. In addition, the department manages the Oregon School for the Deaf and education programs for adjudicated youth. The department carries out educational policies set by the Legislature and State Board of Education and assists districts in complying with applicable statutes and rules.
