The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) protects about 16 million acres of forest and rangeland from wildfire, manages state-owned forestland, and administers the state Forest Practices Act, a cornerstone of natural resource protection.
Fire protection has been the top priority since the department’s creation in 1911. Today, the agency’s fire protection responsibility includes private and state-owned forests, county forestlands, and, by contract, U.S. Bureau of Land Management forests in Western Oregon. Working with landowners and other partners, the department emphasizes fast, aggressive response, putting out about 95 percent of fires before they grow large and costly.
ODF manages about one million acres of state-owned lands, most of which came into public ownership after extensive logging and fires in the middle of the last century. These forests are being restored, and are managed to produce a full range of benefits—from timber harvest and resulting revenue for public services, to clean air and water, recreation, and wildlife habitat.
The Forest Practices Act requires reforestation after harvest and protects streams, wildlife habitat and other natural resources. Field foresters work with landowners to ensure compliance, and to help owners manage forests to produce benefits that enrich the quality of life for all Oregonians.
ODF employs about 660 people year-round; the workforce roughly doubles in the summer, primarily with the hiring of seasonal firefighters.
