Geology and Mineral Industries Dept > Web site
The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries was created in 1937 and is Oregon’s centralized source of geologic information. The department produces maps and reports that can be used to manage geologic resources, including water, and to reduce the loss of life and property due to geologic hazards. The department helps Oregonians understand and prepare for earthquakes, tsunamis, coastal erosion, landslides, floods and other geologic hazards. It is the lead regulator for geologic resources (oil, gas, geothermal energy, metallic and industrial minerals and sand, gravel and crushed stone), with attention paid to environmental, reclamation, conservation and related economic, engineering and technical issues.
The department provides geologic data to assist in policy development of state, federal and local governmental natural resource agencies as well as with industry and private sector groups. The department’s library is a central repository for both published and unpublished state geologic
The Mineral Land Regulation and Reclamation Program, located at the Albany field office, is the lead coordinating agency for state mining regulation, operating through an interagency team-permit process. In Oregon, exploration and operating permits and bonds are required to ensure reclamation of land disturbed by mining.
