Present Duties

The Oregon Board of Optometry (OBO) protects the health, safety and welfare of the public by licensing optometric physicians and enforcing professional standards for the practice of optometry. The agency was founded in 1905 and investigates complaints and violations of statutes and rules governing the practice of optometry. The board’s disciplinary authority includes imposing civil penalties and the limitation, suspension or revocation of an optometrist’s license.

The OBO is a semi-independent, self-supporting agency that receives the majority of its revenue from application, licensing and renewal fees. The agency licenses more than 1,200 active and inactive Oregon optometrists. The OBO office is in Salem and has three staff members. The board is composed of four optometrists and one public member, who are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate to serve three-year terms.

Opticians are not licensed in Oregon, and are not under the regulatory authority of the OBO. Opticians are persons who dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses, filling the valid prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists.
