Present Duties
The Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) is responsible for protecting the public and reducing crime by holding youth offenders accountable and providing opportunities for reformation in safe environments. OYA exercises legal and physical custody of offenders committed to OYA by juvenile courts, and physical custody of young offenders committed to the Oregon Department of Corrections by adult courts. The agency serves the state’s most delinquent youth ages 12 through 24 who commit crimes before their 18th birthday.
OYA is responsible for the supervision, management and administration of youth correctional facilities, state youth probation and parole services, community out-of-home placements for youth offenders, and other services and programs related to youth corrections. OYA also provides funding for community-delivered delinquency prevention and intervention initiatives. OYA provides or oversees the delivery of evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation programs, classroom education, vocation training, and assistance with daily living skills to help youth offenders successfully transition back into their home communities and remain crime-free. These services are available to youth offenders on probation, in close custody and secure transition facilities, and on parole.
OYA operates close custody or secure transition facilities in Albany, Burns, Florence, Grants Pass, La Grande, Salem, Tillamook, Warrenton and Woodburn and provides probation and parole services in all of Oregon’s 36 counties. During 2010, approximately 900 youth were in OYA’s close custody or secure transition programs and 1,100 were under OYA’s supervision on probation or parole. An additional 17,000 youth offenders were served by Oregon’s counties.
