Present Duties

The Oregon Cultural Trust is a statewide cultural plan to raise funds to invest in Oregon’s humanities, heritage and arts. The trust provides resources needed to guarantee that Oregonians benefit from our state’s cultural assets.

Funds from the trust are distributed to counties and tribes to support local cultural projects, granted to nonprofit cultural organizations for projects of regional and statewide significance, and appropriated to Oregon’s existing cultural agencies to support ongoing programs. Funds for the trust are raised through sales of a distinctive license plate and contributions from private citizens and businesses.

The trust works in partnership with the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Historical Society, Oregon Humanities, and the State Historic Preservation Office. It is governed by a 13-member board of directors. Eleven of the members are citizens appointed by the governor and approved by the Senate, and they serve as voting members of the board. The speaker of the House of Representatives and the president of the Senate each appoint a member of the legislative assembly to serve as non-voting advisory members.
