Board of Medical Imaging > Web site
The Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) issues licenses to medical imaging technologists who are qualified to practice radiography, radiation therapy, sonography, nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, the OBMI oversees the educational requirements and issues permits for limited x-ray machine operators. The OBMI was established in 1977 as the Board of Radiologic Technology and currently regulates the imaging practices of over 6,000 active licensees and permit holders.
Licensure assures that imaging technologists working in Oregon are properly educated and trained so consumers can be confident that diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures are conducted as accurately and safely as possible. Accurate imaging helps contain health costs by aiding in the detection and prevention of health problems through effective diagnosis and treatment.
The OBMI’s office, with three full-time employees, is located in Portland, where quarterly board meetings are usually held. The board is authorized by statute to include 12 members: four physicians, five medical imaging licensees, and three members of the public. Board members are appointed by the governor and must be confirmed by the Senate.
