PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: State Representative, 1995-present; chairman, House Trade and Economic Development Subcommittee; member, Judiciary, Commerce, Labor and Budget Oversight Committees.

As a candidate in 1994, Rep. Chuck Carpenter promised to cut government waste, to sensibly reduce regulation, to work for full funding of education, and to get tough on criminals. Chuck Carpenter kept his promises.

Controlling Spending and Taxes:

* Carpenter steered to approval a $30 million cut to the Oregon Economic Development Department, redirecting the money to our schools.

* Supports measure to require tax increases to receive 3/5 approval of the legislature

* Supports 3 percent cap on property tax increases.

* Voted to return more than $300 million in income tax refunds to Oregon families and businesses.

Education:

* Supported legislation to increase parent-teacher control of local schools and raise academic standards.

Fighting Crime:

* Passed new penalties for property crimes, such as auto theft.

* Endorsed by Crime Victims United and Washington County Sheriff Jim Spinden.
