THERE ARE VAST DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RETIRED STATE SENATOR BROWN AND CONGRESSMAN BLUMENAUER ON IMPORTANT ISSUES:

Pesticides in food. Brown, General Counsel, Oregon Consumer League, long supported "the Delaney Clause of the 1958 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which" imposed "a zero tolerance standard for cancer-causing pesticide residues on food". In 1996 Blumenauer voted to repeal this protection. (1996 CQ Almanac, C-52)

Universal health insurance. Brown obtained 400+ signatures for the Health Care for All-Oregon initiative (Measure 23). In April 2001 21 Representatives introduced HCR 99 "directing Congress to enact legislation by October 2004" providing "comprehensive health care for all Americans." Blumenauer is still not a cosponsor. Leadership?

Bankruptcy reform. Brown opposes Bush's bankruptcy "reform" favored by credit card issuers. In 2001 Blumenauer supported HR 333 "despite sharp criticism from consumer groups and small-business advocates." (CQ Weekly, 3/3/2001)

PGE, Enron contributions. Brown, during his Senate years, never accepted 5¢ from PGE (purchased by Enron in 1997) or its executives. Blumenauer, during his last three elections, topped "the Oregon House delegation with $8,500" from Enron and PGE sources. (Oregonian, 1/17/2002)
